The documentary “Risking It All to Ensure the Future of the Next Generation” captures the extraordinary sacrifices of ocean-dwelling mothers—from humpback whales and green turtles to red crabs—who embark on some of the world’s longest and most dangerous migrations to give birth and protect their young. A female humpback whale travels 3,000 miles from Alaska to the calm waters of Hawaii, where she endures the pursuit of dozens of males before miraculously giving birth. In a rare act of solidarity, the males shift from competition to protection, giving the mother a peaceful moment to bring new life into the world. Her newborn calf must grow quickly, learning vital survival skills before their long return journey. | | 05 June 2025
On the low-lying atolls of Kiribati, families like Tear Tata’s are struggling to survive as rising sea levels caused by climate change erode their land, flood homes, and contaminate water supplies. Makeshift coral sea walls offer only temporary protection, while overpopulation and limited infrastructure worsen the crisis. Despite government efforts—such as climate education, mangrove planting, vocational training for seafaring, and new economic ventures like palm sugar production—many residents fear displacement and the eventual loss of their homeland. Yet, a deep sense of cultural identity and resilience persists, as locals strive to adapt, protect their traditions, and hold onto hope in the face of an uncertain future. | | 05 June 2025
Australia Day, celebrated on January 26, commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 and the beginning of British colonization. However, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, this date marks the start of invasion, loss of land, and cultural destruction. Rather than a unifying celebration, many view it as a day of mourning — often called Invasion Day or Survival Day. Critically, January 26 only became the nationally recognized date for Australia Day in 1992, making the tradition relatively recent. Tanya Hosch, social inclusion advocate and AFL executive, has said: 'When you know better, you do better... January 26 does not unite us.' | | 25 April 2025
The statement opens by acknowledging the enduring call for peace first made by Pope St John XXIII in Pacem in Terris, revisited in light of escalating global conflict, misinformation, and political unrest. It names the world’s current state—riven by war, disinformation, and post-truth culture—as both deeply troubling and in need of Gospel hope. The Bishops draw heavily on Pope Francis’ Fratelli Tutti, urging us to recognize the deep connection between truth, trust, and peace, and calling all people of goodwill to be peacemakers in a fractured world. | | 02 August 2023
